What to Know before Laying Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is a great choice for both domestic and commercial properties for a number of reasons. It’s a fantastic alternative to wood flooring if you’re looking for something at a lower cost. Laminate flooring is also really easy to maintain and is a good choice for kitchens and bathrooms due to it being so easy to clean.

If you’re thinking about doing a little bit of DIY and laying laminate flooring yourself, there’s a few things you need to know to do before getting started with it. Or, if you’re just looking to prepare your room ready for someone else to lay the flooring, the below tips will be very handy to you.

Prepare the Room

Start by removing all of the skirting boards in the room you are laying laminate flooring. Next, make sure that the floor is completely clean and level. It’s vitally important to ensure that the floor is level as this will prevent any soft and spongy areas from appearing in the laminate flooring and will also prevent any seams from opening. Laminate flooring can go over the majority of other flooring, with the exception of carpet; it will, however, raise the level of the floor by around ⅜ inch.

Measure the Room

The next step is to then measure the room. Laminate flooring will expand when it’s humid so leave approximately ⅜ inch around the perimeter of the room when measuring; this gap will be covered when you put the skirting boards back on. Also add around 5% to the measurements for any mistakes or waste.

Prepare the Flooring

Once you’ve got the laminate flooring, bring it all into the room and lay out the separate planks across the room. Inspect the planks for any damage; replace them if any damage is present. We suggest leaving the flooring like this for around 48 hours so that it can stabilise to the humidity of the room.
